Everyone’s descent into addiction is different. The severity of the substance use disorder varies from person to person. The circumstances an individual deals with are entirely unique to them.
It stands to reason that an effective rehab program can’t be a one size fits all solution.
If the plunge into addiction is unique, the journey out needs to be equally singular.
That’s the basis for why different types of rehab programs exist.
Sure, there are broad treatment frameworks, which we’ll be discussing here, but within each of those silos are granular programs customized to help a specific person through a particular problem.
What Are the Different Types of Rehab Programs Available for Me or My Loved One?
Broadly speaking, all rehab programs fall into two categories: inpatient and outpatient.
Before jumping into those, though, it’s important to add that detox is a prerequisite to any program. Detox means getting the drugs or alcohol out of your body. It’s a laborious process that comes with the distinctly unpleasant experience of withdrawal. It can’t be avoided, though, because breaking the body’s physical need for a substance is necessary before tackling the mental side of addiction.
So, with detox out of the way, we can move on to discussing inpatient and outpatient care.
Inpatient Treatment
Also known as residential treatment, these programs are generally for those with more severe addiction, who need more supervision and guidance as well as a rigorous schedule to stay focused on the task of recovery.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) explains it this way: “Long-term residential treatment provides care 24 hours a day, generally in non-hospital settings. The best-known residential treatment model is the therapeutic community (TC), with planned lengths of stay of between 6 and 12 months.” Therapeutic treatment focuses on the resocialization of the individual. This approach to therapy uses the community resources, including group treatment and staff, to build the foundation of recovery. Treatment is often highly structured and can be confrontational, with activities designed to help residents examine damaging thoughts and behavior.
Outpatient Treatment
Outpatient rehab is geared towards people with less severe substance use disorders or transitioning from inpatient care to help a person reintegrate better. Outpatient care is built around your schedule. You can take care of work, home, or school responsibilities while going to the treatment facility for regularly scheduled rehab sessions. For some, an intensive outpatient program, which entails much longer sessions, may work better.
Whichever is more appropriate for your needs, both types of rehab pull from the same methods. In both, you’ll partake in individual help you navigate the ins and out of addiction and develop coping mechanisms for potential triggers you’ll encounter. Group therapy will teach that you’re not alone and allow you to create camaraderie and community with those who understand where you’re coming from.
