Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
DBT combines standard cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques with emotion regulation and reality testing. This modality incorporates concepts of distress tolerance, acceptance, and mindful-awareness. Many individuals with substance use disorder as well as trauma experience a dysregulated nervous system, resulting in the inability to process emotions in a healthy manner. DBT effectively assists clients with skills to balance their thoughts and feelings in a way that produces internal harmony.
DBT Skills Training teaches clients skills that will enable them to tolerate emotional distress. Skills learned through this therapeutic approach will offer clients the ability to move though uncomfortable feelings without engaging in harmful, damaging behaviors. Clients will be offered alternatives to the habits they have developed and be provided a space to “practice” using them. This approach has been shown to be particularly effective in alleviating urges for self-harm and assists with impulse control. Clients begin to feel empowered to manage their feelings. The result is more thoughtful, mature, decision making ability and a sense of peace and calm. DBT effectively assists clients with learning to balance their thoughts and feelings in a way that produces internal harmony.
At Safe Harbor, Our experienced clinicians will utilize DBT skills groups to focus on ways clients can incorporate these new tools in their everyday life.
